Breast Cancer Awareness Month in New York City
I realize we’re one week into the month already, but I’d like to take a moment to tell you about some events going on in New York City in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Better late than never, right?
Quick fact: Apart from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is said to be the most common form of cancer in women. Actress Christina Applegate’s recent revelation of her double mastectomy has certainly helped raise awareness to the disease this year. So if you haven’t had your check up this year – it’s time to make that appointment. Like now.
If you want to contribute to the cause, here’s a rundown of some of the Breast Cancer Awareness events happening in New York City:
- Making Strides Against Breast Cancer will be holding their annual walk across major cities in America. According to their website, “Since 1993, nearly 4 million walkers across the country have raised more than $280 million through Making Strides events to help fight breast cancer.” $50 million were raised last year alone. - 12th Annual BMW Ultimate Drive Supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure – will be taking place on October 11th on the streets of New York City. The Drive allows New Yorkers to contribute to the fight against breast cancer by test driving one of the 25 specially branded BMWs in the Ultimate Drive fleet. Every mile driven will contribute $1 towards breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. The Drive is expected to bring in $12 million for the cause this year.
- New one-woman play about a young woman who lost her mother to breast cancer (Mia Perovetz’ “The Things I Wish My Mother Would Have Told Me”) will be making its debut at the Center Stage Theater on October 22, 2008. A benefit will be held for Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE), the only national organization focused on hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (founded by Sue Friedman, a breast cancer survivor who carries the BRCA 2 gene mutation). FORCE is organizing a benefit night on October 23.: the play will be followed by a reception, catered by the Village Pourhouse. Tickets are $75 for the benefit. Click here to order tickets online.
- Join authors A.W. Gryphon (Blood Moon) and Jonathan Breck (Jeepers Creepers) for an auction of celebrity collectibles (including personalized copies of the Blood Moon book and Jeepers Creepers DVD), in support of the Entertainment Industry Foundations Women’s Cancer Programs. The bidding closes on October 14 – night of this year’s Full Hunter’s (or Blood) Moon.
