Eat Like A Kid Again In NYC

Remember all the yummy goodies you used to love to eat as a kid? The ones that make you a little embarrassed to still crave as an adult. Wouldn’t it be nice to find some grown up versions of the old classics? Well it’s 2014 in NYC and it seems like chef’s at restaurants all over the city are trying to give you exactly that. Here are a list of restaurants around Manhattan that are putting adult twists on classic kid dishes.

Chocolate Chip Cookies
-While this one isn’t the most interesting, and can be found at MANY restaurants across the country, Boulton & Watt is making a particular art form of it. This is a super gooey warm chocolate chip cookie, served skillet style with a big jug of icy cold milk.

Chicken Nuggets
-Call me a kid at heart, but I’m a sucker for chicken nuggets and The Nugget Spot has a found a way to satiate the kid in me while also meeting the flavor expectation of my adult self. They use high quality ingredients and let you choose your meat source, your breading and your dipping sauce (they make a range of homemade sauces). I personally love the traditional chicken nugget with cheez-it breading, but if you want to try something different go for a pork nugget with coconut breading.

Onion Rings
-The online rings at Alder are not your traditional beer battered or super bready rings. These puppy’s are more like French onion soup in a ring form. Imagine onions fried in a termpura batter made with cheese stock and then topped with melted gruyere, beef gravy, and beef powder for a burst of umami. These onion rings are no joke.

Mac And Cheese
-I’ll admit it, there are many exceptional choices around the city for some grown up mac and cheese, but if you haven’t tried the version at Empire Diner, you must. Instead of traditional pasta, it’s orzo based with garlic cream sauce, two kids of cheese, fresh black truffle butter, and a crunchy bread crumb topping. YUM!

Slushies
-Remember slush puppies? That’s not what you get at Kelvin Slush. These slushies don’t dye your tongue and they come in adult friendly flavors like spicy ginger and tangy citrus. Also they mix really well with your favorite booze. Don’t be afraid to ask them to mix in some fruit puree, they’ve got quite a variety and it really kicks things up a notch.

S’Mores
-From the dessert masterminds at Dominique Ansel Bakery comes this rich delicious treat. They freeze vanilla custard and chocolate feuilletine within marshmallow (made with honey and Tahitian vanilla bean) and then blow torch them on a stick as you order.

Mozzarella Sticks
-The mozzie sticks at Parm are insanely good. They’re thick, melty and perfectly stringy. How you ask? They use fresh mozzarella curds that they stretch and double bread and then fry to order. Getting a little slight by the amazing mozzie sticks is the fresh house-made marinara sauce that they’re served with.

Milkshakes
-The milkshake at Brooklyn Bowl is basically the best milkshake you ever had as a kid…but with booze. With names like the Bourbon Street Shake, you know what you’re getting. It’s that simple. Plus you can go bowling when your done.

Ants On A Log
-This is by far the most obscure dish to find on a restaurant menu, and don’t expect raisins and peanut butter when you order it at David Burke Kitchen. As a adult, you’ll get roasted veal bone marrow topped with escargot fritters, dabs of aioli and shredded house made beef jerky.

Pigs In A Blanket
-At Telepan Local the pigs in blankets are made from grass-fed beef sausage which is wrapped in a buttery puff pastry and served with a grainy honey mustard sauce. Just try not to eat them all.

Pudding
-A place that just serves pudding? Yes way. At Puddin by Clio you can get adult friendly flavors like caramel macchiato pudding that layers coffee, chocolate pudding, brownie pieces, and plenty of salted caramel.
